Ian Adam-Smith Architects

Founded over 25 years ago by Ian Adam-Smith, the practice specialises in designing and restoring English country houses. Ian’s eldest son, Mungo, joined full-time in 2023. He continues the family tradition of creating homes where architecture, interiors and landscape work together as a coherent whole. The practice focuses on houses that feel naturally evolved over time, whether new builds, sensitive refurbishments or historic estate restorations.

With over 700 projects completed across the South of England, including West Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey, the practice combines careful attention to detail with a strong understanding of planning, heritage and property values. Notable work includes restorations and additions to Arts and Crafts houses by Sir Edwin Lutyens, Charles F. A. Voysey, Richard Norman Shaw and Sir Robert Lorimer. Each project is approached holistically, resulting in homes that are handsome, balanced and built to endure.

Ian and Mungo Adam-Smith’s approach is informed by a lifelong immersion in English country houses, art and design, and a commitment to quality over quantity. Collaboration is central to their work. They work closely with clients, designers and consultants to deliver individually tailored, timeless homes. Most projects arise through word of mouth, reflecting the trust and long-standing relationships they build with their clients.

Here are some examples of their work. For more, please visit their website here.
