Recognising the South Downs' potential as a canvas for unique projects

A winery across a wide landscape.

“The South Downs' appeal extends beyond culinary delights. Award-winning breweries and renowned sparkling wine producers like Nyetimber demonstrate the region's diverse entrepreneurial spirit, offering additional avenues for design and placemaking interventions.”

The South Downs National Park’s heritage of food production presents rich opportunities of authentic, place-based development. Its rolling hills and verdant farmland (85% of the landscape!), is fertile ground for cultivating thriving communities and enhancing regional identities. The area boasts a unique tapestry of producers and artisans, crafting products recognised for their exceptional quality and provenance. Two unique sheep breeds, the Hampshire Down and Southdown, lauded by the Slow Food Foundation, exemplify this dedication to heritage and flavour. Likewise, Hampshire watercress, grown along the Meon and Itchen rivers, adds a piquant flavour to local dishes.

Beyond individual producers, a vibrant network of community-driven initiatives fosters resilience and sustainability. Organizations like Common Cause in Lewes and Fork & Dig It in Stanmer champion local food systems, while village-run shops like Slindon's The Forge ensure accessibility to fresh, quality produce.

Weekend farmers markets, such as those in Lewes, Pulborough, and Petersfield, offer immersive experiences for residents and visitors alike. Winchester's market, recently voted the UK's best, exemplifies the region's vibrant agricultural scene.

Pubs and restaurants like the White Horse in Graffham and the Chestnut Horse in Easton prioritise local produce on their menus, often sourcing directly from local producers. These establishments also serve as vital community hubs, further strengthening the connection between people and place.

As a design and planning consultancy, we recognise the South Downs' potential as a canvas for unique projects. We are committed to partnering with local stakeholders to develop placemaking strategies that respect and enhance the existing character, fostering economic and social resilience while celebrating the distinct identity of this remarkable landscape.

By working together, we can cultivate spaces that resonate with the soul of the South Downs, attracting visitors, nurturing communities, and ensuring the continued flourishing of this vibrant region.
